Awesome image quality with Foveon Merrill large sensor

Since building our first digital camera in 2002, Sigma has single-mindedly pursued the goal of true high picture quality through the development and commercialization of a completely new kind of sensor technology.

This is the world's one and only full color capture system which uses three layers of photodiodes to gather the entire red, green and blue color information of light.

This innovative format minimizes the need for signal processing, thereby preserving image purity to effortlessly render awesome detail and texture.

Since our founding, we have never wavered from our goal of photographic truth. The revolutionary technology that enables us to achieve this goal is known as Foveon, and is what makes every Sigma camera special.

This year, 2012, marks another step forward for Sigma's flagship Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor technology with its extraordinary 46 mega pixel resolution. Now, this next-generation image sensor — which made its debut in the Sigma SD1 — brings its irrefutably superior image quality to every camera in Sigma’s line.

This amazingly natural realism is "standard picture quality" in Sigma's world. And it is the new benchmark for digital camera performance.

With the next-generation Foveon Merrill, you will discover new horizons of image quality and photographic expression.

About the generation-name 'Merrill'

The Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor uses technology originally developed by the late Dick Merrill (1949-2008), a brilliant engineer and talented photographer. This revolutionary image capture system reflects both the artistic and technological sides of Merrill’s personality. As an expression of Sigma’s passion for photography and in honor of Dick Merrill’s genius, we have named the latest generation of the Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor the Foveon Merrill.

Newly developed, dedicated high-performance lenses create synergy with latest Foveon sensor

The Sigma DP series pioneered the concept of a full-spec compact camera with all the power of a DSLR. With a half-century legacy of crafting high-performance lenses, Sigma is trusted among photographers around the world.

In the DP1 and DP2, Sigma applies its optical expertise to create new lenses expressly designed to work in synergy with the latest Foveon sensor.

Their extraordinary performance accurately renders delicate subject detail. Moreover, they can provide beautiful bokeh that enhances a scene’s ambience. This rare combination of capabilities expands your potential for photographic expression.

All new lenses, body and user interface

Along with the Foveon Merrill image sensor, virtually every aspect of the DP series has received a thorough upgrade.

We have optimized the lenses, body and user interface to bring out the larger sensor's maximum potential.

Although the sensor is larger, the body is as compact as ever.

A new focusing ring on the lens lets you manually adjust focus with your left hand while keeping your right on the shutter release.

We have also added a command dial for shutter speed, aperture, menu selection and other operations.

This new user interface gives you direct and convenient control so you can concentrate on taking great photos.
